Attached please find the 20 required sight words for kindergarten. Please have your child cut the words apart (with adult supervision) and place the words in a zip lock storage bag. These words should be practiced at home for 5 – 10 minutes several times a week. The eight additional words are the beginning of our kindergarten bonus word list. These bonus words are not required; however, we will be working on them this year to help build your child’s sight word vocabulary. This year’s word list containing the required words and bonus words is also attached to this letter.
To begin, simply say each word and have your child repeat the word. After a few weeks, your child will begin to remember some of the words. You can make simple sentences with the words such as:
I can see the cat. I see my mom and dad. Look at my dog.
Read the sentence and invite your child to repeat after you. Have your child point under each word as he/she reads.
We will work on these words in school on a regular basis, and we will add 14 bonus words each month throughout the school year. The additional bonus words will be sent home in the beginning of each month for home practice.
Thank you for supporting our kindergarten reading program. It is our hope that together we can help our kindergarten children begin developing strong and successful early reading skills.
